Ed Sheeran is an English singer/songwriter who was born in Halifax and reared in Suffolk. He’s known for his high-energy live presentations, in which he uses a loop pedal and occasionally throws in some raps for good measure.
Ed’s success story began with him performing music at the homes of the elderly. When he was busking in the United States, he was discovered by a record producer. Before receiving the respect he deserved, he performed roughly a thousand gigs and street performances.
Unsigned projects like Loose Change and Songs I Wrote with Amy relied on long-time collaborator Jake Gosling’s production and marked the beginning of their very successful musical partnership. He quickly established a slew of industry acquaintances.
He collaborated with some of the biggest names in UK grime, including Wiley, Ghetts, Jme, and others, on the No. 5 Collaborations Project, which peaked at number 46 on the UK Singles Chart in January 2011. One of the songs, “Little Lady” (with Mikill Pane), was a fan favorite, so Ed created a solo version called “The A Team” that was more radio-friendly, and the rest is history.
The song has now sold over a million copies in the United Kingdom and two million in the United States.
Sheeran’s new single, “You Need Me, I Don’t Need You,” was picked up by Asylum/Atlantic Records. In September 2011, he released his debut album + to tremendous praise. It debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart and went on to sell nearly two million copies in the UK alone.
Ed got his first UK #1 with the Pharrell Williams-produced “Sing” after a string of popular songs, features, and an EP with Yelawolf. Then came his 7x Platinum sophomore album x, which featured a string of hit singles including as “Don’t,” “Thinking Out Loud,” and “Bloodstream.”
Sheeran made his return to social media on New Year’s Day 2017, after a complete year of seclusion. In March, he released his third album, which featured the hit singles “Castle on the Hill” and “Shape of You.”
With 47 million monthly listeners, Ed Sheeran was the most listened artist on Spotify in 2017. With 3,1 billion streaming, his album was the most streamed album ever, while his song “Shape of You” was the most streamed song ever with over 1,4 billion streams.
Sheeran spent the most of 2018 and the first half of 2019 on the road, but he did find time to work on his next album. It was dubbed No.6 Collaborations Project and was released in July of 2019.
