Dua Lipa is a singer-songwriter from the United Kingdom.
She is the daughter of Albanian rock star Dukagjin Lipa, who was born in London on August 22, 1995. She relocated to Kosovo when she was 11 years old, then returned to the UK at the age of 15 to study part-time at Sylvia Young Theatre School.
She signed to Warner Records (Vertigo/Captiol for Germany, Austria, and Switzerland) and released her debut single, “New Love,” after posting covers of singers like Nelly Furtado, Chance The Rapper, and Rihanna.
“Be The One,” the album’s follow-up, became her breakout single in continental Europe. She was also nominated for the prestigious BRITs Critics Choice Award and was shortlisted for the BBC Sound of 2016 list.
With “Hotter Than Hell,” she broke through in the United Kingdom in 2016, and with “Blow Your Mind (Mwah),” she charted on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time. In 2017, he collaborated with Martin Garrix and Sean Paul on their global smashes “Scared to Be Lonely” and “No Lie.”
On June 2, Dua Lipa’s self-titled debut album was published, debuting at #5 on the UK Album Charts and #86 on the Billboard 200, and earning excellent reviews from critics, with many applauding her vocals and confidence.
The album’s sixth single, “New Rules,” was an international success, topping the UK charts and staying in the top five for ten weeks. Dua won two BRIT Awards, including Best Breakthrough Act, for her song “IDGAF,” which was released in early 2018.
Her Calvin Harris collaboration, “One Kiss,” continued to be a hit, and she ended the year with a Complete Edition release of her album.
Dua Lipa spent much of 2019 recording Future Nostalgia, her second studio solo album, which was released to tremendous acclaim on March 27, 2020.
Moloko, Kylie Minogue, Madonna, and OutKast were among the disco and pop musicians who impacted the album. The lead song, “Don’t Start Now,” was released in November 2019 to widespread acclaim, achieving her seventh Top 10 record in the UK and second in the US.
The rowdy “Physical,” from Future Nostalgia, was released in January 2020 and quickly became Lipa’s ninth Top 10 hit in the UK, followed by “Break My Heart,” the album’s third official single.
Dua Lipa is noted for her seductive vocals, dark themes, and honest lyrics, as well as her “progressive” pop sound. Her musical style is described as “dark pop.”
Her main influence is Canadian pop artist Nelly Furtado, whose album Whoa, Nelly! is her all-time favorite. Pink, J. Cole, David Bowie, 2Pac, Kendrick Lamar, Bob Dylan, 50 Cent, and A$AP Rocky are other big inspirations on her music and the way she writes and performs, according to her.
Pink and Nelly Furtado are two artists I like for their honesty and truth in their lyrics. Kendrick Lamar and Chance the Rapper are two of my favorite artists. I intended to combine those two influences in my music: detailed, somber lyrics with raw hip-hop sounds in the verses, leading to a catchy chorus. As a result, it takes on a new dimension, that element that no one else has. At least, that’s what I’d like to believe.
