Doja Cat is the stage name of Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini, a rapper, singer, songwriter, producer, and dancer who was born on October 21, 1995 in Calabasas, California.
Her stage name was inspired by the slang term “doja,” which refers to marijuana, as well as her love of cats. She has been active since Dr. Luke discovered her in 2013. Dr. Luke’s Sony Music imprint, Kemosabe Records, has signed her.
Purrr!, Doja’s debut EP, was released in August 2014 and featured the smash single “So High.” Amala, her debut album, was released in March 2018, and it included the track “Candy.” She released a video for “MOOO!” on YouTube in August 2018, which went viral. In early 2019, she re-released Amala with a slew of new songs, including “MOOO!” and “Juicy,” another chart-topping smash. Her sophomore album, Hot Pink, was released later in 2019.
Doja enlisted Nicki Minaj for their “Say So (Remix)” on May 1st, 2020, marking their first collaboration. This song made history for the two females, debuting at #1 on the Hot Billboard 100 during the week of May 16th, 2020.
