5 fun facts about Netflix’s ‘Malcolm & Marie’: ‘Malcolm & Marie’, Netflix’s new romantic drama has been having quite the reaction since it debuted on the streamer on February 5, 2021.

Sam Levinson, the trendy movie directed by ‘Euphoria’ producer, follows the story of filmmaker Malcolm Elliot (John David Washington) and girlfriend Marie Jones (Zendaya) returning home from Malcolm’s film’s celebratory premiere. A night of intense revelations for the couple erupts in the evening.

Here are five fun things you need to know whether you have seen the movie or it is on your watchlist.

 

1. It is the first feature in Hollywood to be written, created, and funded during the pandemic of Covid-19.

 

During the first wave of the Covid-19 lockdown in 2020, production started for ‘Malcolm & Marie’. Shot in two weeks, between June 17 and July 2, 2020, the cast and crew were forcibly separated for weeks prior to the start of shooting and one week after the conclusion of filming. In reality, the pandemic basically inspired the concept of the two-cast story.

 

2. The film was mostly created by ‘Euphoria’ crew members.

When production for HBO ‘Euphoria’ series halted due to the pandemic, show creator Sam Levinson and lead star Zendaya thought up the concept of creating a feature film that could be shot in their house, according to sources. The film was later filmed in California, in a private home.

 

3. The movie was bought for $30 million by Netflix

Netflix outbid HBO, A24 at the virtual Toronto International Film Festival in 2020 for the film directed by Levinson. For $30 million, the American streamer purchased ‘Malcolm & Marie’.

Levinson contacted British singer Labrinth to work on the original score of ‘Malcolm & Marie’ following his Emmy award-winning success of an original song for ‘Euphoria’.

 

5. The choice of black and white film was not solely aesthetic: 5 fun facts about Netflix’s ‘Malcolm & Marie’

 

The need to make a visually pleasing film was not the only reason a black and white film was produced by director Levinson.

In an interview with The Roots, the filmmaker disclosed that he sought to elegantly portray the ethnicity of the actors. So, I’m starting to think about the fact that I’m also making a film about a young couple who work in Hollywood and they’re both Black. The idea was, what if we were to restore the beauty and sophistication of filmmaking in black and white, except for these two characters, who I believe represent the future.

In an interview with The Roots, the filmmaker disclosed that he sought to elegantly portray the ethnicity of the actors. So, I’m beginning to think about the fact [that] I’m making a movie about a young couple working in Hollywood, and they’re both Black, too.

The idea was, what if the simplicity and sophistication of black and white filmmaking were to be revived, except for these two characters, who I think represent Hollywood’s future or what we want to see.

Another fun and worthy note is the popular kimono from Zendaya! Interestingly, a few months before she shot ‘Malcolm & Marie’ the piece of clothing was purchased by the star actress. It turns out to have come in handy for the movie.
